From the Council:

We would like to thank Charles Young Walls for being both juror and judge of our present member show, Bursts of Creativity, on display at our gallery through Saturday, May 22. His critique of our work was valuable and all members present at the Opening Reception appreciated his review of the work in the show. Individuals were able to talk one-on-one with Charles which was a great opportunity to receive specific evaluation as well as helpful suggestions for future work.

Summer is coming soon—it seems we have hardly had a spring—and Kudzu is gearing up for new shows and ways for us the keep painting and showing our work. We encourage our member photographers, and those who use photos in collage or other mixed media, to enter their work in the coming ATLANTA CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY at the KAZ gallery, October 8 through October 30. Let's have a great display for this event! You can contact Rigsby Barnes with any questions.

A big Thanks goes to Susie Schklar. She has taken on the job on finding ways to better promote Kudzu Art Zone. We have had ads in Creative Loafing recently and have an ad included in a special booklet being put together by the Norcross Art Alliance which will be given out at local businesses and hotels to let customers and patrons know more about what the community has to offer. We have plans for more ads in local papers and flyers and postcards on display for visitors at the Norcross Welcome Center.

Management Council Election

The Kudzu Management Council has three members rotating off this summer. We will soon be selecting those new members. If you are interested in helping make decisions regarding the present and future growth of our Gallery and Studio, please let a current council member know. Those selected will serve for two years. Members of the Council are active in the day-to-day function of our facility, coordinating shows, workshops and special events and determining our growth and involvement in the arts in Norcross and the surrounding area. We need your help! Kudzu is a volunteer organization and only the help of our members will make is a success!

Next Member Meeting

Monday, May 24th at 7 pm: May presenter is Phillip Garrett from Golden Paints. He will be explaining and demo-ing their paints and other mediums. This has been great fun in the past, so plan on a longer meeting this month... at least two hours for his part.

At the Gallery

TAKE NOTICE! There will be a change to the dates for the delivery of work for the next juried gallery show – A Southern Summer—Feel the Heat and the Dominicks’ venue. The Kudzu facility is being rented by the SE Pastel Society for their annual weekend workshop on May 21, 22 & 23 (the normal entry drop off days). To avoid great confusion and interruption of this private event, the dates for the delivery of work will be Friday, 5/14; Saturday, 5/15; Monday 5/24 (regular meeting night), as well as the following Tuesday 5/25, on Open Studio day. Entry fee for the gallery show will be $10 (1-3 works) and for Dominicks’, $5 (1-3).

The juror for the gallery show is to be announced. Reminder: participants in this exhibit will be required to gallery watch one day during the show dates, 11-4.

A Southern Summer—Feel the Heat Opening Reception is Friday, June 4, 7-9 and the show will continue to Saturday, July 24, 2010. Unsold work from Bursts of Creativity can be picked up on the meeting night of 5/24, not on Sat., 5/22.

REMINDER — ATLANTA CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY ENTRY DEADLINE APPROACHES. Members who will be submitting work for this event will deliver the work to the gallery on Friday, June 11 or Saturday, June 12 during regular gallery hours. The entries will be for two categories; 1) straight photography, and 2) Photography in Mixed Media (there must be at least one original photograph in the work). These entries will be juried the following week. Participants juried into the show will be notified and all work will be picked up by June 19, and returned to the gallery to be hung on October 5 (specific delivery date to be announced). The photography juror will be Ken Ross and the Mixed Media juror will be Chery Baird.

July 30 – August 28, 2010: The Kudzu Members of the Southern Colours Art Association will present a special exhibit, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. The artists, Sallie Atkins, Lucy Brady, Rena Cutler, Diana Dice, Sara Grossman, Judy Howard, Cyndi Marble, Christopher Sherry, Catherine Susky and Sandra Tribukait, have chosen this theme for the exhibit featuring people, places and things that have personal meaning to each artist. The opening reception will be held, Friday July 30, 7-9 pm and the exhibit will be open during normal gallery hours Friday and Saturday, 11 -4.

September 10 – October 1, 2010: A special exhibit and fund-raiser with the ‘X’ factor—ARTXTRAVAGANZA, details to be announced.

October 8-30, 2010: ATLANTA CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY, Kudzu members’ juried work will be featured in this unique exhibit celebrating the many facets of the photo and the imagination of the artist. Opening night to be announced.

November 1 – December 17, 2010: ARTISTS’ INTENTIONS, a juried show featuring the work of Kudzu Art Zone members. Open reception will be Friday, Nov. 12, 7-9 pm.

Help Wanted!

Jeannie Fortin is Membership Chair and would like some help with preparing for our member meetings and other special events at the gallery. This would entail simple set up, snacks and beverages, and clean up afterwards. If would like to volunteer for this, please contact Jeannie at 770.476.1638

Reminders

Open Studio: Tuesdays from 10 am to 4 pm. A great time to get together with fellow artists to paint and enjoy sharing ideas. Contact Diana Dice for more info.

Sketch Night with Professional Models: Tuesdays from 6-8 pm - Practice up on your drawing skills. These classes are for members only. Fee of $5 goes to pay the model. Contact Kathy Kitz for more info.
