June 2010
From the Council:
It has been approximately 8 months since our Management Council was created. The council meets twice a month; second Monday of the month and the fourth Monday at the general Kudzu meetings. Sandy Lacy, Cynthia Corbin, Rigsby Barnes, Jeannie Fortin, Jim, Mengason, Kathy Kitz and Katrina Stone were already active in helping to lead Kudzu. Vince Maiello and Delicia Reynolds have been involved since the birth of Kudzu, and still are. Susie Schklar and myself were new to this sort of leadership responsibility.
- Sometimes folks think that nothing is happening at Kudzu. Not true. On Tuesdays, Diana Dice has open studio time. Kathy Kitz organizes our sketch nights with professional models.
- Several new procedures and ways for people to volunteer have been developed. And there are folks in place with these delegated responsibilities.
- New landscaping is growing, thanks to Jeannie Fortin.
- Probably of most note to all the members is a very successful new policy regarding volunteer duty in the gallery. If you have work hanging in a show, you are expected to "man the gallery" (at least once during that show) either on a Friday or Saturday.
- We try to keep information about our budget transparent. A treasurer’s report is included in every Vine.
- We are also at the beginning of a new relationship with the Norcross Arts Alliance. The council has begun an additional quarterly meeting to brainstorm about what Kudzu is all about—discussing new ways to promote our gallery and member artists, coordinating with events the NAA is developing and addressing issues and concerns brought forward by our members. (Our next quarterly meeting is Sunday, June 13 – so notify a council member with any suggestions.)
Some may think that more should be done. But let’s get real—Rome was not built in a day and everyone is a VOLUNTEER. New council member election/selection is happening soon. So here is your chance to pitch in. Consider becoming a council member and help make ART happen at Kudzu and in Norcross.

Next Member Meeting
Monday, June 28th at 7 pm: June’s presenter is our member Christopher Sherry. He will be explaining and demo-ing "Perspective Without a Ruler", a great opportunity to learn about an easy way to understand perspective and apply it to our work. Chris has many years experience as an architect and painter and regularly teaches classes in perspective. Bring pencil and paper, any size (gridded would be helpful), maybe even red, blue and yellow pencils – no rulers or straight edges are necessary. This is strictly a ‘guess’ approach to perspective.
Monday, July 26th at 7 pm: OPEN for booking. If you have any suggestions of a local artist or vendor, please let Kathy Kitz know... soon! Thanks!
Monday, August 23 at 7 pm: Anita Stewart returns for another fun demo of her colorful and inspirational work. She’ll bring the brushes, too!
At the Gallery
- "A Southern Summer—Feel the Heat" Kudzu members portray their vision of heat in all its facets. Opening reception is Friday, June 4, 7-9 pm and the show will continue through Saturday, July 24, 2010. We were honored to have Judy Greenberg, President of the Georgia Watercolor Society judge the entries for the exhibit.
- ATLANTA CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY ENTRY DEADLINE APPROACHES. Members who will be submitting work for this event will deliver the work to the gallery on Friday, June 11 or Saturday, June 12 during regular gallery hours. The entries will be for two categories; 1) straight photography, and 2) Photography in Mixed Media (there must be at least one original photograph in the work). The work to be juried does not have to be framed but it must be matted in a presentation fashion.
The entries will be juried the following week. Participants juried into the show will be notified and all work will be picked up by June 19, and returned to the gallery to be hung on October 5 (specific delivery date to be announced). The photography juror will be Ken Ross and the mixed media juror will be Chery Baird. The fee is $10 for each category (1-3 entries per category).
- July 30 – August 28, 2010, The Kudzu Members of the Southern Colours Art Association will present a special exhibit, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. The artists, Sallie Atkins, Lucy Brady, Rena Cutler, Diana Dice, Sara Grossman, Judy Howard, Cyndi Marble, Christopher Sherry, Catherine Susky and Sandra Tribukait, have chosen this theme for the exhibit featuring people, places and things that have personal meaning to each artist. The opening reception will be held, Friday July 30, 7-9 pm and the exhibit will be open during normal gallery hours Fridays and Saturdays, 11 -4 pm.
- September 10 – October 1, 2010—Art X-travaganza, Kudzu Art Show & Silent Auction with the ‘X’ factor—is being planned—interested in joining the planning committee? Email the Gallery coordinator. This event will present 12 x 12 works of art (unframed) from Kudzu members, emerging artists, local talent and established artists hanging side by side in the Kudzu gallery, expressing a wide variety of subjects, mediums and styles ready to be bid on. By participating in this fund-raiser, artists will generously donate 50% of the final sale to Kudzu Art Zone for year-round exhibitions and education. A beginning bid is established and bids will continue in $25 increments.
A few teaser details were mentioned at the last Kudzu meeting, but by mid June all details will be finalized and the specifics will be released. 12 x 12 inch Masonite boards will be available for members (1 per member), or the artist can submit an entry on another type of 12 x 12 foundation. All work will be unframed with no hanging wire. They will be lined up on a specially installed wall rail ready for the viewer to make a bid! X-citing!
