March 2010

From the Council:

Here we are in March and spring will officially begin soon. And Kudzu is ready with new gallery shows and workshops to challenge us and expand our creativity. We had a great turnout for our last member meeting. Charles Walls with finished demoTalented artist and teacher Charles Walls was our guest presenter. His demo was inspiring and the discussion was fun and informative. Thanks to everyone who attended. These kinds of presentations are important opportunities for all our members to learn and grow as artists. If you know of a local artist that you would like to invite to Kudzu, please talk with Kathy Kitz. A big thank you goes to Susan Faircloth who, along with her husband as helper, has volunteered to be our new Facilities Manager.

The council would also like to say thank you to the many members who are volunteering to help staff the Gallery on Fridays and Saturdays. Having the Gallery is an important part of why Kudzu Art Zone is successful.

Sincerely, MCKAZ

the Management Council of Kudzu Art Zone

Next Member Meetings

Monday, March 22 at 7 pm: This time we have one of our own members, Judith Surowiec, as our guest artist. Judy is full of wonderful, colorful ideas about art and her paintings are unique expressions of her thoughts and experience. She has asked those who attend this meeting to wear something bright and colorful...it all means an exciting demo, we are sure! See more at: www.judithfineart.com

Monday, April 26 at 7 pm: Our special presentation is from our own member Neva Spell. She will be sharing with us the many benefits of becoming a Fan of Kudzu Art Zone on Facebook! She and Jim Mengason will be giving us a demo on how to access our website and our new Facebook page.

Monday, May 24 at 7 pm: May presenter is Phillip Garrett from Golden Paints. He will be explaining and demo-ing their paints and other mediums. This has been great fun in the past, so plan on a longer meeting this month...at least two hours for his part. This Lecture will explore a multitude of new surfaces for painting and collage created with Golden’s Glass Bead Gel, Translucent Molding Pastes, Fiber Paste (paper in a jar), Crackle Paste, plus mixed media applications and layering effects for drawing and painting.

Robert Burridge Workshop

We are excited about the AquaMedia Workshop with Robert Burridge scheduled the week of March 29-April 2. There are 21 people signed up for this unique experience. A special reception is planned for Thursday, April 1 at 7pm. All Kudzu members are invited to attend (an evite reminder will go out) and meet Robert as well as see all the work his students are producing. It should be lots of fun.

NOTE: For safety reasons, we ask all our studio renters to please remove any art they have hanging on the walls outside their spaces for the duration of this workshop.

At the Gallery

The snow storm of Feb. 12 cancelled the opening at the gallery for Reflections of the Heart. The award winners were: 1st, Miriam Gaisiner, Studio Corner; 2nd, Mikki Root Dillon, Readying For Sale; 3rd, Cyndi Marble, A Loving Heart and the Honorable Mentions went to Susan Faircloth, John Hart and Sara Grossman. Congratulations all!

Atlanta Celebrates Photography— at the KAZ gallery October 8 through 30. ACP is a metro Atlanta event but entries for this exhibit will be limited to KAZ members. Entries will be for two categories: 1) straight photography, and 2) photography in mixed media (there must be at least one original photograph in the work). The entries will be juried the week of June 12 in order for the winners to be included in various publications. Please contact Rigsby Barnes for more details.

Bursts Of Creativity will be the theme of the next KAZ gallery show. As the spring season bursts on the Atlanta scene, the members’ creative juices are flowing too. Entries for this juried exhibit will be received March 19, 20 & 22 with a gallery fee of $10 for 1-3 entries. The Wall Of Small was a big success with four sales during the December-January show. Another Wall of Small will be featured in this show with entries not larger than 5 x 7 (without frame). These entries will be included in the three per person limit.

Thank you to all the gallery sitting volunteers. There are always a few open spaces during an exhibit and all members are encouraged to help out during those times to keep the gallery open. It is MUCH appreciated!
